EU Machinery Regulation: Why a machinery regulation?

The new EU Machinery Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1230) was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on June 29, 2023, and it will come into effect after a transition period of 42 months starting from January 20, 2027. It replaces the previously applicable Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

Some key changes resulting from the Machinery Regulation include addressing new risks and opportunities related to digital technologies. These changes encompass:

• Collaborative applications, such as human-robot collaboration (collaborative robots - Cobots).
• Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the use of AI in machinery and related products.
• Cybersecurity in order to minimize risks associated with machine networking and potential cyber attacks.

It is essential for manufacturers, importers, dealers, and other stakeholders to familiarize themselves with these changes to ensure their products comply with the new requirements.
